Charging and costs

Plug in at night, drive to work in the morning.

Most electric car owners charge at home. Long EV checks your wiring, fits a wall charger and shows you the fast chargers on your usual routes.

Charging and servicing

Three things to know about running an EV

  • A hand holding a charging plug beside a wall charger

    Charging at home

A 7.4 kW wall charger fills most models overnight. A technician checks your meter and wiring before fitting it.

  • A fast charger between parking bays in an underground car park

    Public charging

A DC fast charger takes the battery from 10 to 70% in about half an hour. The adviser shows you how to find stations and pay in the app.

    Servicing an EV

No oil changes and fewer wearing parts. Brakes, tyres and battery coolant are checked on each maker’s schedule.

Charging questions

Charging, batteries and servicing

Does charging overnight harm the battery?

No. The car stops when it is full; many owners set the limit to about 80% for days with short trips.

Can I charge from a normal socket?

Yes for small models such as the VF 3 or the Mini EV, but slowly. The socket needs its own wiring and breaker; a technician checks it first.

How do public chargers charge you?

Usually by the kWh, paid in the operator’s app. The prices on this site are sample figures.

Will the battery wear out after a few years?

Capacity drops slowly with time and charging cycles. Battery warranty follows each maker’s policy.

What does an EV service cover?

Brakes, tyres, battery coolant, the cabin air filter and software updates, on each maker’s schedule.
